HISTORY 1806

1938

The earliest recorded use of the word ‘Cocktail’ was made in a New York newspaper, The Balance and Columbian Repository, which responded to a reader enquiry stating “Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirit of any kind, sugar, water, bitters — it is vulgarly called a bitter sling and is supposed to be an excellent engineering potion, in as much as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head...a person having swallowed a glass of it, is ready to swallow anything else.”

Queen Elizabeth is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

1839

Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth requisitioned by the British Government to act as Troop Ships, carrying over 1.5 million Troops around the world. Sir Winston Churchill paying tribute at the end of World War II stated that the Cunard Queens had shortened the war in Europe by at least a year.

Samuel Cunard establishes the British North American Royal Mail Steam Navigation Company – known as Cunard Line – principally to carry the Royal Mail to Canada and the United States of America.

1840 Samuel Cunard’s first ship, the 1,154-ton paddle steamer Britannia leaves Liverpool, England, bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the first Transatlantic service.

1859 Samuel Cunard was made a Baronet in recognition of the company’s service in the Crimean War.

1912 Carpathia is the first ship on the scene and rescues all survivors from the White Star Liner Titanic on that tragic April night.

1939

1947 The two Cunard Queens enter regular Transatlantic service.

1940’s In the late 1940’s the use of Bitters in Martinis disappeared, and Vermouth became less important as an ingredient.

1960’s An insurgence of spirits with mixers, beers and wine appreciation pushes the traditional Martini to one side.

1967

Laconia is the first passenger ship to offer a circumnavigation of the globe – the first World Cruise.

Queen Elizabeth 2 is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the presence of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret.

1930

1969

The Savoy Cocktail Book is the first published Cocktail recipe book. It was compiled and annotated by Harry Craddock.

Queen Elizabeth 2, or QE2 as she becomes affectionately known, enters service.

1933

1980’s

The United Kingdom Bartender’s Guild (UKBG) is created.

The re-discovery of the Martini gained momentum and it was now perceived as a cocktail icon. The 1980’s was the period when Bartenders became known as Mixologists, and cocktails as Martinis.

1922

1934 Queen Mary is launched in Clydebank, Scotland, by Her Majesty Queen Mary. The first merchant vessel to be named by a member of The Royal Family.

“Your ship is loaded, take her; speed is nothing, follow your own road, deliver her safe, bring her back safe safety is all that is required.” Samuel Cunard’s first order to his Masters.

1990’s Towards the end of the 1990’s we see a wealth of new cocktails being developed with the Martini once again evolving into what seemed to be limitless flavours and igniting a new trend in bars across the world.

2000 Cunard places an order for the largest ocean liner ever to be built. She will not only be the largest at 151,400 tons, but the longest, tallest and most expensive. Her name – Queen Mary 2.

2004 12 January, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II names Queen Mary 2 in Southampton, the ship’s home port.

2006 Rum manufacturers start positioning themselves against the seemingly unstoppable Martini, and re-introduce the Mojito and Caipirinha which quickly gain a following and flavours start entering this traditional favourite.

2007 Cunard takes delivery of Queen Victoria, a new 90,000-ton liner from builder Fincantieri in Venice, Italy, in November. The ship is named in Southampton on 10 December by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall in the presence of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

2008 QE2 leaves the Cunard fleet after over 39 years of service.

2010 Queen Elizabeth is named by Her Majesty The Queen in October 2010.

2012 Cunard launches Weddings on board with the first wedding taking place at sea on Queen Mary 2 mid-Transatlantic in April 2012. Cunard salutes Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee when Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria meet in Southampton during the Jubilee Celebrations.

To come... The company looks forward to celebrating 10 years of service by Queen Mary 2 in January 2014 and the 175th anniversary in 2015, of the start of Transatlantic service by Britannia in July 1840!
