PROCEDURES FOR DIRECTED INDIVIDUAL STUDIES (MBAD 6890)

An outline of the proposed project will be prepared, normally by the student with the aid of the supervising faculty member, which addresses those items outlined below. Once the faculty member is satisfied with the proposal, it will be submitted to the Department Chair for approval. A copy of the proposal is to be kept on file in the departmental office for a period of five years.

FORMAT FOR DIRECTED STUDIES PROPOSALS

I. ABSTRACT

A brief description of the proposed study, including the specific topics to be analyzed, should be presented.

II. OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the study should be outlined or discussed. This section of the request should stress the academic content of the study. It should also explain why a regularly scheduled course would not satisfy the objectives.

III. METHODOLOGY

This section should explain how the specific objectives are to be met. Requirements, i.e., papers, reports, exercises, library research, etc., should be identified and described briefly. Please note that a single research paper is seldom sufficient for three hours credit. The student, in cooperation with the faculty member, should consider completing work comparable to a complete class.

IV. COURSE CREDIT

The credit hours to be assigned should be identified. The hours per week that the student would be expected to spend on the course in study or research should be included. (Example: Three credit hours to be assigned on completion of the course. The student is expected to spend nine hours per week in study, research, and faculty supervision). The completion time of the project should be specified. (Example: Work will be completed at the end of the Fall semester, 2010).

V. FACULTY

The faculty supervisor should be identified.

VI. APPROVALS

Signatures on the proposal outline should evidence approval by both the Supervising Faculty Member, the Department Chair and the Student.
