Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification Process Eligibility Requirements In order to qualify for your PMP, you must meet certain eligibility requirements:

4-year degree criteria

Secondary degree criteria

• Four year degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent)

• Secondary degree (HS diploma, associate’s degree or equivalent)

• 3+ years/36+ months of unique, nonoverlapping project management experience (at least 4,500 hours spent leading and directing project tasks)

• 5+ years/60+ months of unique, nonoverlapping project management experience (at least 7,500 hours spent leading and directing project tasks)

• 35 contact hours of formal education (PDUs)

• 35 contact hours of formal education (PDUs)

Application Process: If submitted online, PMI will respond to your request within 5 business days (10 days if submitted via postal mail). If your application is audited, you will need to provide PMI with supporting documentation (copies of diplomas, signatures of managers/supervisors, certificate of completion showing PDUs). The PMI allows you 90 days to submit the documentation, but audits (1 in 5 applications are audited) can greatly delay your application process.

Contact Hours (PDUs): Many PMP candidates wait until their application has been approved prior to scheduling a training class for the education contact hour requirement (PDUs). This is not necessary, since most certification prep classes will provide guidance on the actual application as well as the PDU credits necessary for your application to be approved. ASPE recommends that at the least, you have started your application and have a ‘rough draft’ documenting your past projects and experience. Attending a session of the PMP Certification Exam Boot Camp will provide you with all of the necessary contact hours (35) to satisfy the education requirement for PDUs. The class will also discuss all of the exam content, focusing on topics most likely to be covered on the certification exam. Students who have attended the class and gone on to sit for the PMP exam within a four week period have a historical pass rate of 97%. ASPE’s course carries an Exam Pass Guarantee which means ASPE will pay for a reexamination in the event that you do not pass the exam within four weeks of attending the class. If you do not pass the second attempt, ASPE will allow you to attend the class at no cost.

Certification Exam: Once you have attended a course to acquire your 35 PDU credits and your application is approved by PMI, you are ready to schedule your exam at a Prometric testing facility. You can elect to write either a computer-based test or a paper-based test. Cost of the exam is dependent on PMI membership status: • •

Computer-Based Testing: $405 (PMI member) $555 (non-member) Paper-Based Testing: $250 (PMI member) $400 (non-member)

PMI annual membership is $129. PMI members are entitled to a free, online PDF version of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), 5th Edition. This is the material upon which the PMP exam is based, so it’s recommended for candidates to join PMI, not only so you can save money, but so you can also have a head-start on studying.
