Purpose: The group will build a hovercraft powered by either a gas or electric leaf blower. The purpose being to have the hovercraft and one rider travel the farthest distance down the hallway after being given an initial push by the rest of the team.
Rules: 1. The hovercraft must be powered by an electric leaf blower. 2. Additional forms of propulsion are allowed as long as they do not involve any contact with anything except the hovercraft. 3. The hovercraft must carry one or more members of the team. That rider must stay on the hovercraft for the entire trip, and may not touch anything except for the hovercraft during the trip. They also may not manipulate devices that touch anything but the hovercraft. 4. No lubricant may be used that leaves any residual on the floor or walls of the school. 5. Pushers must be from the team and may only be in contact with the hovercraft in the designated gray are of tile. 6. Members of the team may run beside the hovercraft making sure that cords and other items stay out of the way. 7. Distance is measured from the end of the designated gray tiles to the point at which the front of the hovercraft comes to a stop. The front shall be determined to be the part of the hovercraft that travels the farthest.
Grade: Grades will be based on distance traveled, and only on the distance traveled. The group that travels the farthest will be awarded a 105. Each place behind that group will have a deduction of 2 points. The current record is 487 feet.
This project is due April 1. If any member of the group is present, the project must be present also. In the event that none of the members of the group are present, the project will count only as a lab grade, and points will be based on the distance traveled relative to the rest of the class. In the event that no project is presented on the next day a group member is present, the entire group will receive a zero for a test grade.
