|0201 |“Look! There’s Uncle Charles!” cried | | | |Carrie | | | |excitedly as the bus stopped in the old|1. _______________| |0202 |town | | | |square. | | | |It was vacation, and she and her twin |2. _______________| |0203 |brother, Simon, were off to spend two | | | |weeks | | | |by the sea with their favorite uncle. |3. _______________| |0204 |Uncle Charles owned an old stone inn | | | |called | | | |the Treasure Chest, overlooking the | | | |harbor |4. _______________| |0205 |at Cannonball Cove. | | | |He was full of stories, and the twins | | | |would | | |0206 |stay up late at night listening to |5. _______________| | |tales of | | | |pirates and sea battles, buried |6. _______________| | |treasure and | | |0401 |ghosts. |7. _______________| |0402 |It was the ghost stories the twins | | | |liked best, | | |0403 |especially the one about Captain |8. _______________| |0404 |Redbeard, |9. _______________| | |who was said to haunt the very inn they|10._______________| |0405 |were | | | |staying in. (Not that Carrie and Simon|11._______________| |0406/0407 |had |12._______________| | |ever seen or heard him during the four |13._______________| |0408 |summers they had spent there.) |14._______________| |0409 |_______________________________________| | | |_ | | | |This vacation, Uncle Charles was very |15._______________| |0410 |busy. | | | |The inn had become so popular that he | | | |was |16._______________| | |converting the old stable into extra | | |0601 |bedrooms | | | |for guests. He told the twins they |17._______________| |0602/0603 |would |18._______________| | |have to amuse themselves this year. |19._______________| |0604 |That |20._______________| |0605/0606 |meant no stories or no fun. |21._______________| |0607 |“We’ll be bored,” said Simon, as they |22._______________| | |unpacked their bags. | | | |“No way,” said Carrie. “We’ll find |23._______________| |0608/0609 |something |24._______________| | |cool to do.” | | |0610 |And they did. |25._______________| | |They met Toby, the new cook’s son, and | | |0611 |he |26._______________| | |knew some interesting things about the |27._______________| |0612 |inn | | |0613 |their uncle hadn’t told them. |28._______________| | |“It has a secret passage, and they say |29._______________| | |Captain Redbeard hid his gold in one of| | |0801 |the | | |0802 |rooms,” he told them. |30._______________| | |_______________________________________| | | |On the second night of their vacation, |31._______________| |0803 |the |32._______________| |0804 |twins waited until Uncle Charles had |33._______________| |0805 |gone to | | |0806 |bed. Then they met Toby in the hall. |34._______________| |0807 |He |35._______________| |0808 |was carrying a flashlight. |36._______________| | |“Where are we going?” asked Carrie. |37._______________| | |“To the secret passage. But we’ll have| | |0901/0902 |to be |38._______________| |0903 |really quite,” said Toby. “If my mom |39._______________| | |finds |40._______________| |0904 |out I’m not in my room, I’ll be in big | | | |trouble.” |41_______________ | |0905 |The three of them crept down the hall. | | |0906 |Toby |42._______________| | |moved an old wall hanging aside and |43._______________| |0907/0908/090|opened |44._______________| |9 |a small door hidden behind it. He |45._______________| |0910 |climbed |46._______________| | |into the secret passage, and the other |47._______________| | |two |48._______________| |1001/1002 |followed him. When the door was |49._______________| |1003 |closed, |50._______________| |1004 |Toby turned his flashlight on. |51._______________| |1005 |“This passage goes along the back of |52._______________| |1006/1007 |the |53._______________| | |guest rooms. Pirates used it to hide |54._______________| |1008/1009 |from |55._______________| | |soldiers in the old days.” |56._______________| | |_______________________________________|57._______________| |1010/1011 |_ |58._______________| |1012 |The passage was dusty and full of |59._______________| |1013/1014 |matted old |60._______________| | |cobwebs. It was too low for the |61._______________| |1015/1016 |children to |62._______________| |1017 |stand up, so they had to crawl along on|63._______________| | |their |64._______________| |1018 |hands and knees. |65._______________| | |Halfway along the passage, Toby stopped| | |1201 |suddenly. “Listen!” | | | |Strange voices were coming from one of |66._______________| | |the |67._______________| |1202/1203 |rooms. They were high-pitched and |68._______________| |1204 |seemed to be in a funny language. Toby|69._______________| | |slid back a | | |1205 |loose panel in the wall. The children |70._______________| | |peered | | | |inside. | | |1301 |_______________________________________|71._______________| |1302 |_ |72._______________| |1303 |Carrie shivered. “What sort of thing |73._______________| |1304 |makes |74._______________| | |noises like that?” she said. “I want |75._______________| |1305/1306 |to go |76._______________| |1307 |back!” |77._______________| |1308 |Toby shone his light into the dark | | | |room, and all three followed its beam |78._______________| |1309 |with their eyes. |79._______________| | |Suddenly something flew at | | | |them-something | | |1401 |white and screeching! Toby jumped |80._______________| |1402 |back, | | | |knocking Carrie and Simon over. |81._______________| | |“It’s a ghost. Uncle Charles was | | |1403 |right. The |82._______________| | |inn is haunted!” whispered Simon. | | |1404 |“Let’s get |83._______________| | |out of here!” | | |1405 |_______________________________________| | | |“Don’t be silly. It’s not a ghost,” | | | |said Toby. |84._______________| |1406 |“I’m going in for a closer look.” |85._______________| | |“But what if the guests catch us?” | | |1407 |asked | | | |Carrie. “We’ll get into trouble.” |86._______________| | |“It’s OK,” said Toby. “I saw them go | | | |out |87._______________| |1601/1602 |earlier-two men in an old van.” | | | |The children climbed through the |88._______________| | |opening. In |89._______________| |1603/1604 |the corner of the room was a big metal |90._______________| | |thing | | |1605 |glinting in the moonlight. |91._______________| |1606 |“It’s a cage!” whispered Carrie. “And | | | |it’s full |92._______________| |1607 |of birds. They look like parrots.” |93._______________| | |Something fluttered by the window. |94._______________| |1608/1609 |Simon | | | |went to investigate. |95._______________| | |“Look! One of them must have escaped. | | | |And | | |1701 |it’s tangled up with a piece of cloth. |96._______________| |1702 |They | | | |must have put it over the cage to keep |97._______________| |1703 |the | | | |birds quiet. Come here, little fella.”| | | |_______________________________________|98._______________| |1704 |_ | | | |Simon untangled the parrot, who jumped |99._______________| | |up | | | |onto his shoulder and squawked | | |1801 |gratefully: |100.______________| | |“! Buenos dias!! Buenos dias!” | | |1802 |“Hey, did you hear that! It’s speaking | | | |Spanish! That’s what we heard inside |101.______________| |1803 |the | | | |tunnel.” |102.______________| | |The other parrots joined in, and soon | | |1804 |there |103.______________| | |was a chorus of Spanish squawking. |104.______________| |1805/1806 |_______________________________________|105.______________| |1807 |“I bet those men are bird smugglers,” |106.______________| | |said | | | |Toby. “I knew something wasn’t right |107.______________| |1901/1902 |about | | | |them. They must be bringing the birds | | | |in |108.______________| |1903 |from South America. That’s why the | | | |parrots | | | |speak Spanish.” |109.______________| | |“How cruel!” said Carrie. “I saw a | | | |program |110.______________| |2001 |on TV about that once. A lot of birds |111.______________| |2002 |die |112.______________| |2003/2004 |when smugglers take them. They squash |113.______________| | |them into tiny boxes and don’t take |114.______________| |2005 |care of them. We can’t let those men |115.______________| |2006 |get |116.______________| |2007 |away with it.” |117.______________| |2008 |_______________________________________|118.______________| |2009 |__ |119.______________| |2010 |Just then, they heard footsteps outside|_ | |2011/2012 |the |120.______________| |2013 |door and the rattling of keys. Toby |_ | |2014 |pointed |121.______________| |2015 |to the sliding panel to tell the other |_ | | |two to |122.______________| | |climb through, and he followed behind. |_ | |2201 |They had just slipped through when the |123.______________| | |door |_ | |2202/2203 |was flung open and the light came on. |124.______________| | |The trio stayed crouched in the secret |_ | |2204 |passage, listening to the men in the | | | |room. | | |2205 |They were talking quietly, but every |125.______________| | |now and |_ | | |then the children heard a few words: |126.______________| | |“…tomorrow…seven o’clock…main |_ | | |wharf…” After a while, the door opened |127.______________| |2206 |and closed again, and all was quiet. |_ | |2207 |The children crawled out of the passage| | |2208 |and | | | |sneaked back to Simon’s room in the |128.______________| |2209 |attic to |_ | | |make a plan. | | | |_______________________________________| | | |_ | | |2401 |“We have to do something,” said Toby. |129.______________| |2402 |“A |_ | | |boat must be bringing some more parrots| | |2403 |in |130.______________| |2404 |tomorrow night.” |_ | | |“You’re right, Toby,” said Carrie. |131.______________| | |“But how |_ | | |can we stop them?” |132.______________| | |“I know-we’ll keep a lookout for any |_ | | |suspicious-looking boats from up here. | | | |And | | | |we’ll follow the men to the harbor if |133.______________| | |they |_ | | |leave the inn. As soon as we see them | | | |with | | | |the parrots, we’ll call the police.” |134.______________| | |“Good idea,” said Simon. “They’ll be |_ | | |sorry |135.______________| | |they ever tangled with the Treasure |_ | | |Chest |136.______________| | |Trio!” |_ | | |_______________________________________| | | |__ | | | |After dinner the next day, Simon, | | | |Carrie, and |137.______________| | |Toby met in the attic room. Toby had |_ | | |borrowed a pair of binoculars, and they| | | | | | | |scanned the harbor for signs of | | | |activity. Sure | | | |enough, at six-thirty, a rusty fishing | | | |boat | | | |appeared in the distance, and by seven | | | |o’clock it was tied up at a wharf. | | | |Soon | | | |afterward, the two men left the inn and| | | |drove | | | |toward the harbor in their old van. | | | |_______________________________________| | | |__ | | | |“OK, team, action stations!” said Toby,| | | |and | | | |the three of them raced downstairs. | | | |Uncle Charles was busy in the cellar, | | | |but | | | |Carrie couldn’t leave without writing a| | | |note | | | |for him. She scrawled a few lines | | | |about going | | | |down to the harbor to “catch some | | | |crooks” | | | |and left it under a magnet on the | | | |fridge. | | | |Behind the inn were some winding steps | | | |leading to the harbor. | | | |“It’s much longer by road,” said Toby. | | | |“This | | | |is a short cut. We should be there | | | |before | | | |the van.” | | | |_______________________________________| | | |__ | | | |Toby was right. When they reached the | | | |wharf, they had just enough time to | | | |hide | | | |behind a pile of packing crates before | | | |the van | | | |arrived and the two men jumped out. At| | | |the | | | |same moment, a gangway was lowered from| | | | | | | |the old fishing boat, and another two | | | |men | | | |appeared with a large box. | | | |_______________________________________| | | |__ | | | |“Look, there are the smugglers!” said | | | |Carrie. | | | |“What are we going to do now?” | | | |“Get the police, Carrie. We’ll keep | | | |them busy | | | |here, won’t we, Simon?” | | | |“You bet, Toby!” | | | |Carrie crept out from behind the | | | |crates. | | | |Suddenly there was a yell from the | | | |smugglers. | | | |“Hey! What are you doing?” | | | |Carrie started to run. | | | |“Stop that girl!” shouted one of the | | | |men. | | | |Carrie froze. Toby jumped up and stood| | | |in | | | |front of her. Simon jumped up and | | | |stood in | | | |front of Toby. The two men from the | | | |inn | | | |were running toward them. The others | | | |were | | | |carrying the box back onto the boat. | | | |_______________________________________| | | |__ | | | |Suddenly there was a siren and a | | | |flashing | | | |light as the police car raced down the | | | |wharf. | | | |“Run!” yelled one of the men. He and | | | |his | | | |friend turned and headed for their van.| | | |Toby and Simon ran after them, and the | | | |police car pulled up in front of the | | | |van, | | | |trapping it. Within seconds, Uncle | | | |Charles | | | |and three police officers had leaped | | | |out of | | | |the car and grabbed the men, while a | | | |police | | | |launch came alongside the boat to stop | | | |it | | | |from leaving. | | | |“Good work, kids,” said the police | | | |officer in | | | |charge. “We’ve been trying to catch | | | |these | | | |smugglers for some time. You’ve saved | | | |a lot | | | |of birds from suffering at their | | | |hands.” | | | |“But it’s lucky you left me a note-or | | | |there | | | |would have been big trouble! added | | | |Uncle | | | |Charles with a grin. | | | |_______________________________________| | | |_ | | | |Visits to Uncle Charles are even more | | | |fun | | | |now. The police gave the parrots to | | | |the local | | | |zoo, and the children visit them every | | | |year. | | | |The parrots seem to remember the trio. | | | |Whenever Carrie, Simon, and Toby go | | | |inside | | | |the big aviary, the birds fly up to | | | |them, | | | |perch on their shoulders, and say, | | | |“!Muchas | | | |gracias! !Muchas gracias!” | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
